THE PLANET OF DEATH Artic Adventure 'A' Inform version by Neil Bowers Release beta-2 / Serial number 040804 / Inform v6.30 Library 6/11 Mountain Plateau You are on a mountain plateau. To the north there is a steep cliff. Obvious exits are down, east, and west. You can see a piece of sharp flint here. > [This is a flaw with the original game itself, but I, personally, prefer a "show, not tell" approach to my IF; that is, You seem to want to talk to someone, but I can't see whom. > rather than telling me that my space ship has been mysteriously disabled, a screenful of text of me finding the ship You seem to want to talk to someone, but I can't see whom. > disabled would be better; this would also help flush out my own motivations, some backstory, what I'm doing on the You seem to want to talk to someone, but I can't see whom. > planet, etc. Having played the Conrad Button text adventures I understand that this is a staple of old IF, but it still You seem to want to talk to someone, but I can't see whom. >irritates me. Anyway.] That's not a verb I recognise. >x flint It looks like a caveman's cutting tool. >get tool You can't see any such thing. >[Hah!] That's not a verb I recognise. >get flint Taken. >look Mountain Plateau You are on a mountain plateau. To the north there is a steep cliff. Obvious exits are down, east, and west. >about This is an inform version of Artic Computing's Adventure 'A', released in 1981 (in the UK). It was originally released on the ZX-81, and later for the ZX- Spectrum. The game is credited to Simon Wadsworth, but I haven't seen confirmation of this. This was one of the first text adventures I played. I was surprised to find there wasn't a port, so decided to rectify that as a project for warming up my Inform skills. It's not a particularly good game, but of interest historically, or perhaps nostalgically. The goal of this port is to let people experience one of the earliest UK adventures. I have no plans to materially change the game, but improvements in interaction are fair game (the original supported 'noun verb' only, and in many places 'use ' is the right action). Suggestions and bug reports are very welcome. Neil Bowers neil@bowers.com >help Try looking around. >d Dense Forest You are in a dense forest. There is a rope hanging from one tree. To be honest, I didn't like this game much at all. Sprinkled with a fair amount of bugs, awkward sintax in several places, and that force field thing has got ot be the worst guess-what-the-author-is-thinking puzzle I have ever seen in an IF game. Not to mention that it is a puzzle-fest, and while I enjoy puzzle-fests, this is the kind of puzzle-fest that looks like it could ahve an (at least entertaining) plot to it, with *lots* of room for description. But there just isn't. I know that the the author isn't allowed to add more to this because he's just porting the agame over, but I still find the sparcity (or just plain lack of) detail extremely aggrivating. And a mazze! A *MAZE!* And not even a useful maze, a completely arbitrary maze that you have to figure out by trial and error! Honestly, this game is not particularly interesteing, or engaging, or really anything that makes IF fun, and I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. But I am a professional, (harr harr) and so I have done my level best to test the game thoroughly. And now I go to betatest a competition 04 game. I am a busy man, it seems. Rather than submit games to this comp, entrants beta-test this game and submit a bug report as their entry. More information on the comp can be found at: http://www.strangebreezes.com/if/comps/beta2004/ Entries are judged on four criteria: 1. Organization. How well are the bugs categorized? 2. Clarity. Is each bug clearly explained and reproducible? 3. Thoroughness. How many bugs does the tester find and report? 4. Ability to criticize. Including game design and porting issues. Entries (bug and comment reports) are to be submitted to Jess Knoch at jessicaknoch@mindspring.com by 11:59 pm EST on September 4, 2004 (which is also 12:59 am EDT on September 5, 2004). Preferred format is .txt; however, doc files are also accepted.
