The Magic Toyshop

Author:  Gareth Rees, 1995.
Review by Jenn.

Nutshell:  Definitely an “attack from all flanks” game that challenges you and makes you cringe (at least I did—this level of deviousness isn’t exactly intuitive).

Game Info:  (where to download, etc)

Wonderful.  This game has nowhere to go but has lots of games to keep you occupied.  If you are an experienced IF player you will catch onto some of these games quickly, but the author must have realized this because they don’t remain simple for long. If you get stuck, I recommend you leave the game alone for a while, then come back to the beginning and look at the problem differently (and thoroughly). Most of the puzzle solutions involve creative thinking, and a little bit of cheating.

Nine puzzles are found wherein: an unusual Towers of Hanoi can be found in this store, as well as a classic stolen from Graham Nelson.  There is a version of Lines and Boxes that pulls from my memory a section of Golem in the Gears, by the peerless Piers Anthony, and a very suspicious looking sundial. The only NPC is the storeowner’s daughter who doubles as the help system, and her clues leave something to be desired. Overall a fine effort.
